01

Start with the period

Check which dates a report covers. Comparing one month with a full quarter can make changes appear larger or smaller than they are.

02

Ask what is included

Find out which records were used and whether any information is missing. A report is easier to understand when you know what it represents.

03

Look at the detail behind a change

If income or expenditure looks different, ask which transactions contributed to that change. A single purchase or a payment arriving at a different time may explain it.

04

Keep your next questions practical

Ask which records need updating, which invoices are still open and what information your accountant needs. Bring specific questions to a qualified adviser when making tax or financial decisions.
